With the recent announcement of England’s roadmap out of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, businesses across the country are preparing for the next stage of the pandemic. As the nation looks to re-open, though, how will we see businesses re-adjusting their IT strategies to help them thrive in the New Normal? We look at why Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery is the answer.

The importance of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) plans and solutions should not be underestimated. They are a safety net that is in place to save a business in the event of a disaster – whether a flood or fire, a cyber attack or data breach due to human error.

The pandemic has seen a rise in cyber crime, with criminals looking to take advantage of businesses who have seen many staff switch to remote working over the past 12 months. They have made the most of businesses taking time to adapt to a new way working and communicating, causing untold millions of pounds worth of damage in the process.

As businesses begin their own return to office strategies, some of those full-time, some continuing to employ flexible working methods with a hybrid working environment, BCDR plans should remain at the heart of every business’ decision because without adequate data back-up and recovery provision it is irrelevant where your staff are based.

BCDR plans and systems provide peace of mind and work in conjunction with a strong IT strategy to help keep your business operational and safe in the event of a disaster – and we know they can come from anywhere and cause the most catastrophic amounts of downtime. If you’re not sure if your business needs a BCDR solution, or if your business is at risk from a disaster, try our recovery time calculator now and see exactly how much downtime will cost your business.

Three layers of back-up are better than one…

As a Datto Blue Diamond Partner, Neuways is one of a select group of distinguished global MSPs who work with the best back-up specialists around, to give our customers the best business continuity and disaster recovery solutions and advice.

‘Better safe than sorry’, is a mantra that BCDR aims to meet. As a result, the recommended advice is to back-up company data not just once, or twice, but THREE times:

  • Device: the primary data, and the information you work with on your PC, laptop or sever on a daily basis.
  • On-site: stored separately and securely to the primary data on your initial device. This data is usually stored on a Datto backup device, such as a hard drive that will deliver instant access to the latest local version of your data should the primary type become inaccessible.
  • Off-site: by placing a third version of your company’s data in the Cloud and storing it off-site, the business is securing its long-term future. If a business’ building were to be hit by a fire or flood, then the business could remain operational with the help of the data held off-site, in the Cloud, which benefits further from being able to be accessed from any working location.

By retaining three separate copies of your data, in the event of any kind of disruption, your business will be back online within hours as opposed to days. This dramatic reduction in downtime results in less revenue lost, as well as avoiding long-term damage to the company’s reputation. If cyber criminals attacked your business, and a ransom of thousands of pounds was issued, having a recent copy of your company’s records can help save even more funds.

Protection post-lockdown

Whether your business will be continuing to employ a flexible working approach for the foreseeable future, or returning in-force to the office, the back-up and recoverability of your data and systems will need to be factored into your data management tactics – because we KNOW you are going to need to need it sooner or later!

With a combination of employees working from home and in the office, thorough back-ups will need to be taken and secured safely in centralised locations. The consistency of this data recovery method will need to be tested regularly as a new norm takes shape.
