The way in which Microsoft communication plans will operate is changing. As the flexible working landscape continues to evolve, so does the technology giant’s own communication offering. But what does this mean for Microsoft customers? Allow us to explain…

The biggest change is…Microsoft 365 Business Voice is no more. Once Microsoft’s telephony service offering for small to medium-sized businesses, the VoIP option included Private Branch Exchange (PBX) features, a domestic calling plan and audio conferencing.

However, on 1st March 2022, Business Voice will merge with Microsoft Teams. While it sounds like a big change in Microsoft’s communication plans, it’s not. In its place will be Teams Phone with Calling Plan bundles. This will feature PBX features and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) connectivity for SMEs to take advantage of. There are some small changes, though. Unlike Business Voice, Teams Phone with Calling Plan, does not include audio conferencing options. These audio conferencing features are now included in Microsoft 365 bundles.

The idea behind the change by Microsoft is to make Microsoft Teams the singular destination for communications. Be it, text-based, audio or video calls, Teams will be the place for users to go. The move also simplifies purchasing for SMEs. As a result, the Microsoft Teams Phone with Calling Plan bundle is the cloud-based solution to make Teams even more powerful and flexible.

Both free and charged phone numbers can be set up. Other features include call menus to help callers reach their desired department, and call queues for high-traffic phone numbers. In addition to this users can be given their own phone numbers, enabling them to receive calls directly – all through the Microsoft Teams Phone with Calling Plan bundle.

Existing users of Business Voice will be able to renew their subscriptions until 30th June 2022, or simply switch to the Teams Phone with Calling Plan option, instead.
