Google and Facebook have had recent global outages, raise the following question – does your business have the right business continuity solution in place?

This week, Google suffered the largest, most widespread outage in a long time – on the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web no less!

Users reported issues with accessing Google services including Gmail, Google Drive, Hangouts, Maps, and even YouTube.

Gmail, which has over one billion users, saw affected individuals unable to send emails, open attachments, and access drafts. Google Cloud Storage was inaccessible in all regions.

The outage, which lasted for several hours, has since been resolved but the cause has not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp suffered their most severe outages yet, with disruption lasting over 14 hours. Even just an hour of downtime can cost businesses potentially thousands of pounds worth of damage – and with many organisations relying on Facebook Workplace for business, this week’s outages could be terminal.

These Google and Facebook outages do raise the following question, however:

What could downtime mean for you?

Downtime is disastrous, with a loss of business continuity potentially fatal to your business.

Starting as an internal crisis that hampers productivity, an operational outage can quickly escalate and cause a ripple effect in your supply chain, damaging your reputation and losing business.  If you suffer downtime, your employees cannot do their jobs. If your employees cannot do their jobs, your customers cannot receive your products or services.

And if you can’t sell your product, you cannot acquire the capital to buy from your suppliers. Having a business continuity plan is therefore essential to restoring faith in your business.

Downtime will always cost your business money, but failing to plan for an unexpected outage can be financially devastating. Even just an hour of downtime can cost thousands of pounds worth of damage and lost business opportunities, resulting in lost profit. And with only 10% of businesses without a BCDR plan surviving a disaster, the length of downtime can determine the future of your business.

Reputational damage is an indirect consequence of an IT disaster. If your business is unprepared for potential disaster, customers are far more likely to view you as a reckless and untrustworthy partner. Damage to customer relations and your business’s reputation not only affects your profit, but also the likelihood of generating future business and attracting talent.

GDPR is another key consideration – with fines of €20 million or 4% of annual turnover (whichever is greater) for loss of personal data, you cannot go without a backup and BCDR solution.

And with only 10% of businesses without a BCDR plan surviving a disaster, it is imperative that your backup solution meets your business needs.
