The Guardian staff told to work from home for the second week following a ransom attack

The Guardian notified the UK’s data privacy watchdog about the security breach following a ransomware attack before Christmas. The publication realised the news of a serious IT breach a few days before Christmas saying the attack had affected parts of the company’s technology infrastructure.

The newspaper has alerted Britain’s Information Commissioners Office (IOC) and is making enquiries. Organisations are required to notify the government agency within 72 hours of discovering a ransomware attack. 

“As we previously announced, the Guardian’s systems have been subject to a serious network disruption,” a spokesperson told The Register. “We have been able to keep publishing our journalism digitally and in print, but several key IT systems have been affected. The work to restore our systems fully is ongoing and will take some weeks. We have asked most staff to work from home for the next three weeks to allow our technical teams to focus on essential technical work.” said a spokesperson.

No cyber criminals have claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Pates Grammar School in Gloucestershire is one of the 14 schools hit by the Vice Society cyber attack, leading to documents such as children’s SEN information, passport scans, staff pay scales and contract details.

The Grammar School is said to have taken the data breach very seriously. Reports state the Vice Society has been behind multiple high-profile attacks against schools in the UK and USA, with the FBI already releasing an alert on the group’s activities.

The group demands money for the data before leaking the documents if payment is not made.

The hackers stole data from Pates Grammar School using generic search terms, such as folders names “passports”, “contracts”, and “confidential”. These folders contained passport scans of pupils and parents dating back to 2011, contractual offers made to staff, teaching documents, documents containing headmasters’ pay, and student bursary fund receipts.

Vice Society website also contained information from the following schools:

• Carmel College, St Helens
• Durham Johnston Comprehensive School (hacked in 2021, documents posted online in January 2022)
• Frances King School of English, London/Dublin
• Gateway College, Hamilton, Leicester
• Holy Family RC + CE College, Heywood
• Lampton School, Hounslow, London
• Mossbourne Federation, London
• Pilton Community College, Barnstaple
• Samuel Ryder Academy, St Albans
• School of Oriental and African Studies, London
• St Paul’s Catholic College, Sunbury-on-Thames
• Test Valley School, Stockbridge
• The De Montfort School, Evesham

Pates Grammar School is said to have contacted parents back in September 2022 regarding IT systems and phone lines being down, following up in October, stating its systems were accessed by an unauthorised third party.

A spokesperson for the school has said they are investigating the breach and working alongside cyber-security specialists to conduct a thorough assessment and analysis of this data.

IcedID is commonly spread over spam emails with malicious Office file attachments, in this case, the attackers used a phishing website to deliver malware families or download additional modules.

The website was disguised to look like a legitimate Zoom site with a download button, once clicked, victims were promoted to get a Zoom installer file which was in fact, a version of IcedID malware. It’s unknown whether any data was stolen.

Change is just around the corner for users of Windows 7 and 8, as Microsoft decides to end support for these versions this week, meaning users will have to make the switch to either Windows 10 or 11 to continue receiving support and updates.

This decision includes updates coming through the ESU program to Windows 7, and the company has said it will not extend a similar program for Windows 8 and 8.1. Users have been advised to upgrade their software or device if their current one does not support the newer versions.

Statistics show that over 11% of desktops worldwide run Windows 7, with this software being released 10 years ago. Microsoft urges users to make the jump and reassures users that devices using Windows 7 can be upgraded to Windows 10, however, this will expire in October 2025. Microsoft is also changing version 109 of its Edge Browser and WebView2; they will no longer be receiving new features, security updates or bug fixes. It will also be the last supported version of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2.

In addition, Google has also announced Chrome 109 is the last version to support Windows 7,8/8.1. Chrome 110 will be released in early February and will require Windows 10/11.
