GoDaddy, a well-known web hosting company, disclosed a multi-year sophisticated security breach that allowed unknown cyber hackers to install malware and steal a source code.

In December 2022, GoDaddy’s customers complained about redirections on their website to malware sites, which reason was unauthorised third-party access to servers hosted on their cPanel environments.

During the 10-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), GoDaddy admitted that the attack in December 2022 was connected to other security breaches they faced in March 2020 and November 2021. The attack in 2020 compromised the hosting login credentials of about 28000 GoDaddy’s customers and some of their employees’ personal data.

In the November attack, a rogue actor used these compromised details to access a provisioning system and source code for Managed WordPress (MWP), which affected almost 1.2 million active and inactive customers across GoDaddy brands.

Several Virgin Media channels in Ireland went down after an ‘unauthorised attempt’. This cyber attack is still ongoing, and it’s unclear how much it affected other parts of Virgin Media – some of the programmes affected by the attack are Virgin Media Three, Four, More and VMTV. The restoration is still in progress.

A statement released a few days ago by Virgin Media said: “Our ongoing security monitoring system has identified an unauthorised attempt to access our systems in recent days. Due to the precautions we have implemented, there will be temporary effects to broadcasting some of our recorded programming on Virgin Media Three, Four, More and VMTV Player.” Virgin Media successfully isolated and terminated the breach but hasn’t been able to give any more information on how the attack happened.

Virgin Media became a victim of a cyber attack back in 2020 that exposed about 900 000 UK customers.

We recommend that your company invest in Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery solutions in case a cyber attack or natural disaster happens and your business cannot operate as usual.

PayPal scams on rise again, this time using legitimate accounts to send phishing invoices

Scammers are now creating legitimate PayPal accounts with the primary goal – of sending phishing invoices to unaware customers. Since these emails come from the official service@paypal.com email address, the chances of falling for these scams are incredibly high.

PayPal has been and still is one of the most lucrative targets for cyber hackers, and its scams are rising again. This time hackers are trying to be more clever, using legitimate accounts to spread malicious invoices directly to PayPal users.

Hackers are creating accounts and sending phishing emails; only last month, PayPal informed 35 000 its customers about the security breach.

The email itself is not malicious since it can bypass several checks, including DMARC, DKIM and SPF, as it appears legitimate, coming from the official service@paypal.com email address.

You and your employees must know how to spot these fake emails and invoices. One of the main elements to look out for are spelling mistakes, grammar errors, urgent requests or threats to create panic, fake signatures, and malicious links that urge you to click and verify your account or update your information. Never click on anything that you’re not expecting to receive. Instead of clicking on a link, log in through a new tab to your PayPal account to find any notifications. If you are unsure, visit https://neuways.com/phishing-aware/ for more information.
